On Saturday December 10 about 70 folks from Sedona, Cottonwood, Phoenix and from as far away as France caravanned to the Village of Tewa at First Mesa on the Hopi Reservation to make the 11th annual Holiday delivery to 85 Tewa Elders. The weather will never again be as perfect as it was for this year’s trek to Hopi, temperatures in the 50’s, no snow, and no mud. This year’s Tewa Holiday Project included $13,500 in food and personal items; Coats4Kids delivering 133 brand new coats to First Mesa Elementary and Toys4Tewa collecting over 150 brand new wrapped Christmas presents for Tewa children, all generously donated by our Tewa Holiday Project “Family”. Special shout outs go to: Laura VanHouse for hosting the Kickoff Party and her efficiency expertise, Caroline Diehl and Verde Valley School students for masterful execution of the Coats4Kids component, Whole Foods and Weber’s IGA for allowing us to place the Coats4Kids displays at their stores, BMO Harris Bank and Dale and Rosemary Stellick for the hosting the Toys4Tewa displays and collection point. I get asked quite often, why do this. There is a need, but most importantly the gratitude from the Tewa Elders and the Tewa Community is overwhelming and that is what makes doing this worthwhile and rewarding.
